It’s 1985. You’re 13, you live in the middle of nowhere, and all your friends love “Miami Vice”. But late at night, you’re able to pull in college radio stations from Iowa, Wisconsin, sometimes even Chicago. This collection might be your soundtrack.

The Premise

1985, rural Illinois.

When a same-sex family’s teenage son invites a school friend to stay overnight, their elaborate plans to appear “in the closet” backfire, leaving their reluctant son to hold their secret together.

Spare Rooms takes the classic coming-of-age story to an almost forgotten world: the height of the Reagan-era, experienced by a family on the fringe. Their risks and their story echo even louder today.
